AUGUSTA, Ga. — The 2022 Masters is coming down the stretch on Sunday, and while 36- and 54-hole leader Scottie Scheffler remains on top, a sterling round from Rory McIlroy has turned Augusta National on its head. McIlroy matched the best Sunday round in Masters history, posting an 8-under 64 to stand as the clubhouse leader as Scheffler looks to hold strong over the final few holes.
The winner receives $2.7 million and the elusive green jacket, but Scheffler has every advantage given his play all week and confidence coming in as the No. 1 golfer in the world. As far as Tiger Woods, a gutty and impressive effort over the first two days led to the five-time Masters winner making the cut for the 22nd consecutive tournament at Augusta National. However, Tiger followed that up with the worst round of his career here, a 6-over 78, and matched that effort on Sunday for a 156 on the weekend.

Rory McIlroy waits after making history
Your clubhouse leader at the 2022 Masters can do nothing but sit and watch as his hopes at a career grand slam likely slip by once again. Scottie Scheffler remains on top at the Masters, scoring birdie on the 14th to go up four shots on the field with four holes to play. However, McIlroy even being in this position is absolutely remarkable.
Rory entered the day 1 over and seemingly out of the hunt. Instead of packing it in, he put forth a sterling effort by matching the best Sunday round in Masters history with an 8-under 64. McIlroy posted a bogey-free round, starting 4 under on the first nine before matching that effort on the second nine. He scored eagle on the 13th with a tremendous approach and birdied the 18th out of the sand to the roars of the patrons. (Playing partner Collin Morikawa did the same, marking one of the best one-two punches on the 18th that I can remember).
McIlroy now sits at 7 under, four back of Scheffler despite coming one stroke shy of tying the course record and posting his second-lowest round in any major. It was also the only bogey-free round that any golfer scored at Augusta National this week.

This feels like it’s about over, folks.
Huge par putt for Scottie Scheffler at 12 AND a triple bogey for Cameron Smith on the same hole.

Cameron Smith goes swimming on No. 12. I gasped. He then flies his next shot. Looking at a real double bogey potential here. Huge turn of events, especially after picking up a stroke on the 11th.

BIG birdie for Cameron Smith on No. 11 after a bogey at the 10th. Waves at the crowd then power-walks over to the 12th tee box, leaving Scottie Scheffler alone for a long attempt at a par save.
Which of course he makes.
Scheffler’s lead stays at three strokes.

Leader Scottie Scheffler gives one back with his first bogey of the day at the par-4 10th hole. But a break: Cameron Smith misses a gimme five-footer to also bogey the 10th. So Scheffler’s lead will remain at four strokes.
