Books on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s book discussion group for adults in their 20s and 30s, will meet next on Tuesday, March 29, 7:00 PM, at Great American Pub, 148 Bridge Street, Phoenixville. The group will discuss Natasha Bowen’s New York Times Bestseller, “Skin of the Sea.” The book is a fantasy debut inspired by West African mythology in which a mermaid takes on the gods. Simi prayed to the gods, once. Now she serves them as Mami Wata — a mermaid — collecting the souls of those who die at sea and blessing their journeys back home. But when a living boy is thrown overboard, Simi does the unthinkable and saves his life, going against an ancient decree and opening herself to punishment for her defiance. To protect the other Mami Wata, Simi journeys to the Supreme Creator to make amends. However, something is amiss — the boy she rescued knows more than he should, and something is shadowing her, something that would rather see her fail. Phoenixville Public Library hosts the next presentation in their partner-sponsored “Community Gardening around the Village” series on Thursday, March 31, at 7:00 PM at the Library. This free, in-person program, titled “Spring into Healthy Eating,” will be presented by the Registered Dieticians of Phoenixville Hospital. March is National Nutrition Month and the hospital is celebrating healthy eating. Spring planting in our area includes vegetables such as snap peas, broccoli, beets, carrots, radish, and greens. The hospital’s Registered Dieticians will discuss the nutritional benefits of these vegetables as well as healthy meal planning ideas. This event is free and open to the public. Phoenixville Public Library will host a free, in-person presentation, “Phoenixville’s Early Inns and Taverns,” on Monday, April 4, at 7:00 PM. John Keenan of the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area will be the presenter. Join us for this fascinating presentation as we go back in time to look at the places in Phoenixville that offered food and drink and maybe even a room for an overnight stay. Several of these places, such as the Bull Tavern (1734) or Columbia Hotel (1893) may be well known. But others like Antietam House (1865) or Jefferson House (1851) might be less familiar. You’ll see what many of these locations look like today as well as how they appeared many years ago. This event is free and open to the public. Live music returns to Phoenixville Public Library on Thursday, April 7, at 7:00 PM with a musical mashup of Zen Torpedoz and Mr. Paul & Holly Bee. Two great musical acts back to back and mixed together for a fun night. Drop all your chores and bring it on over, slide it on over, strut it on over to the Library and witness this musical extravaganza! Zen Torpedoz is a group of talented, experienced musicians who are well versed in a variety of musical genres. They have a list of great blues and rock covers in addition to their original songs. Each member has played in a number of bands spanning many years. They are proud members of the Phoenixville Acoustic Jam Group and you can find them frequenting the Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville, often as noted performers. You will also catch them at a number of community jams where they bring their unique style and personality to the scene. The Torpedoz have played at the Wayne, PA Porchfest and a number of other festivals and nightspots including the Soundbank and the Phoenixville Public Library! As an added special treat we have Mr. Paul and Holly Bee! What can we say about this great duo who are a part of the Phoenixville music scene and have been for the past five years? They have performed at many venues around the area including Steel City and the Soundbank, and are known for their beautiful harmony, doing originals and covers from all genres and decades. Learn Microsoft Excel in a series of free, in-person classes on selected Saturday mornings in April at Phoenixville Public Library. Paul Celentano will be the instructor. The schedule is as follows: Microsoft Excel Basic (April 9), Intermediate (April 23), and Advanced (April 30), 10:00 AM to noon each day.
