Ector County, TX — December 2, 2021, Hector Rodriguez was injured due to an accident where a truck crashed into Rodriguez’s vehicle.
Investigators say they responded to the area of FM 866 and I-20 at around 7:41 a.m. According to reports, 27-year-old Hector Rodriguez was in a Chevy Cruze traveling northbound on FM 866. At the I-20 service road, officials said that an eastbound truck pulling a trailer failed to yield and crashed into Rodriguez’s vehicle.
Reports show that Rodriguez had non-incapacitating injuries. No other injuries were reported. At this time, additional details about the crash are unavailable.

This sort of thing can happen for all kinds of reasons, though it wouldn’t be surprising if this was just a negligent truck driver making a mistake. It is still important for investigators to consider all possibilities. There could even be some highly unusual situation like one I looked into a while back where it turned out TxDOT had removed stop signs before a man allegedly ran one of them. With that said, even if something likely, such as distracted driving or fatigue led to the crash, it’s important to let all the evidence tell the whole story.
For example, I had a case in which a truck driver was driving for over 20 hours straight when he caused a serious crash. When we looked into things, we found that the driver’s boss would routinely pressure drivers to cut corners and meet unreasonable deadlines all to get as much work done as possible. It didn’t matter who they put at risk–even the drivers themselves. This ludicrous behavior was basically a ticking time bomb, and it was only a matter of time before someone got hurt.
I’m not saying anything like that happened here, but the investigations into that particular example revealed a situation requiring a lot more evidence and legal maneuvering than just some driver looking down at their phone. Whatever led to this truck wreck, steps should always be taken to make sure the victims and families involved are getting all the facts. Whether or not authorities took these steps remains to be seen.
