The Mercedes G-Class was launched back in 1979, and it is one of the coolest cars ever. It’s the last of its kind, a big box on wheels that is far from aerodynamic. The G-Class originally was a utilitarian car, but over the years it has been transformed into something that you would only catch the richest of people driving. The G-Class is a proper luxury car that takes on things like the Range Rover or Bentley Bentayga and is also one of the best luxury SUVs to buy this year, whether you’re looking at a brand new one or a used car.

It’s an absolute monster, and it makes you feel like a mobster when driving it. The driving position is fantastic, and you truly can see everything on the road, plus the off-road ability is phenomenal, the car can go anywhere with ease. Here’s what makes the G-Class so awesome.

9 The Interior

The current G-Class features two large screens like a Mercedes S-Class and there are tons of gadgets. The seats are very comfortable and soft, which makes them ideal for long journeys. The build quality is fantastic, and the car does feel quite sturdy inside. The new interior has really helped the G-Class reach record sales figures last year.

The headroom and legroom are perfect, too, thanks to the boxy design. The older G-Class models have always had tough, durable interiors, and throughout each facelift and update, they became more and more luxurious.

Nothing complements this car more than a great big thumping V8. You have the G550 and G63 V8 models nowadays, both of which pack a 4-liter twin-turbo V8. Both engines are very similar and both push out crazy power figures. Of course, environmentalists hate these cars.

The V8 engine was fitted into the G-Class from the W463 generation onwards. The most popular 8-cylinder choice seems to be the 5-liter V8, which is a bulletproof engine. Mercedes also fitted the G-Class with a V8 diesel, which sure does sound grizzly.

7 The Looks

The G-Class is one of a kind. Those boxy looks do threaten other drivers, and those big wheels sure do look insane. The G-Class is offered in many exterior specifications, from the humble professional series to the crazy AMG models. There is something out there for everybody.

We have a soft spot for the standard G-Class in utilitarian spec. It’s just so humble, and it sure stands out from the crowd, since most G-Class models nowadays are packed full of bling. Sometimes the simpler things in life are just better.

6 The Off-Road Ability

No other Mercedes SUV can go off-road. Luckily, the G-Class isn’t like every other Mercedes SUV. The ground clearance, even on the AMG models, is pretty good, and it allows you to drive confidently off-road with no issues whatsoever.

The G-Class is very similar to the Range Rover. It started as a utilitarian car built for going off-road, but later on, it was transformed into a luxury car. That off-road element still lives on in the G-Class, and it sure is one of the best off-roaders ever created.

5 Armies Still Use It Today

The army still uses the G-Class even today. It’s a weapon on wheels, and it serves many great purposes all over the world. Mercedes recently launched the W464 G-Class, which is a G-Class made specifically for government agencies and the military. It is a very basic-looking car, though it is somewhat reminiscent of the 1980s G-Class models.

The whole point of the military spec G-Class is to be practical. This car can go anywhere you want, whether it be in a desert or a wet forest. The police even use an armored version of the G-Class as a security vehicle in some countries.

4 The Squared Models

If the standard G-Class wasn’t crazy enough, you have the Squared models. The first Squared model was the 6×6, which is a 6-wheeler pickup version of the G63, and it is the most pointless car ever. It does look phenomenal, though, and it sure is bags of fun. By far, one of the craziest Mercedes cars ever.

Then there was 4×4 Squared which was very confusing. It was a 4-wheeled version of a 6-wheeled version of a 4-wheeled car. Nevertheless, it was more practical, and it quickly became a major hit amongst celebrities such as Kylie Jenner. The squared models are fantastic off-road, though with eye-watering price tags, we doubt many owners have ever taken their car off-road.

3 Ultimate Celebrity Must-Have

The number of celebrities who own or have owned a G-Class is unreal. This and the Range Rover are the two top cars to have in Hollywood, and they are everywhere. Celebrities love the boxy shape of this car and all the luxury features.

The G-Class is a status symbol, and it shows off wealth and power. The best G-Class owned by a celebrity is probably Drake’s G650 Maybach Landaulet. That car is very rare and is worth probably over $1 million today, and it looks like a private jet inside.

2 It’s Still In Production.

The G-Class is still in production, and it has been since 1979. This may not sound like a big deal, but Mercedes manufacturers the GLS, which is another large luxury SUV built by Mercedes that shares similar dimensions. That car could easily fulfill the boots of the G-Class, yet Mercedes decide to carry on making the G-Class and are even going to create an electric G-Class for the future.

The main reason why the G-Class has stayed in production is due to demand from top clients. It’s an SUV with attitude. The car is almost like a supercar, since it turns heads and breaks necks everywhere it goes. Also, in AMG form, it even performs like a supercar.

1 AMG Models

An AMG G-Class is something special. The current G63 packs a 4 liter V8 Biturbo with 577hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. The same engine is used in the AMG GTR and AMG E63. The first G-Class AMG was the 500 GE 6.0 AMG, which was a tuned version of the 500 GE. Then there were the very rare 1993 G36, which had an inline-6.

The infamous G55 came later on in 2002 with a naturally-aspirated 5.4-liter engine, but in 2005, the car received a supercharger. It was very popular amongst wealthy celebrities, and there is one G55 in Dubai that is powered by an SLR McLaren engine. There were also V12 AMG models, such as the very rare 2003 G63 and the G65 AMG.

SUVs With The Worst Fuel Economy

SUVs aren’t generally known for amazing fuel economy but these 10 vehicles are the worst offenders.
