Moderate magnitude 4.3 quake hits 33 miles northwest of Pecos, Texas, United States early morning
4.3 quake 16 Dec 6:25 am (GMT -6)
A very shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported early morning near Pecos, Condado de Reeves County, Texas, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, December 16th, 2021, at 6:25 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Toyah (pop. 98) located 22 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pecos (pop. 9,500) located 33 miles from the epicenter, Kermit (pop. 6,400) 59 miles away, and Carlsbad (pop. 29,000) 60 miles away.
